In fact, itd be kind of stupid not to. If adding social media buttons actually did expand your message…
Just yesterday, I followed a link to The Free Dictionary (while writing a different blog post) and noticed this absurdity up in the upper right-hand corner. Take a moment to see whats going on here
The fact is that the world of social media has become a crowded place. And the urge to include a ton of share buttons is real
But youve got to draw the line somewhere, or else youll end up like The Free Dictionary.
Look, Im not trying to pick on TFD specifically, its just they have really made my point for me
When it comes to social media strategy, less is more. Most of us dont have the resources to manage profiles on every network out there. It pays to be strategic, and fortunately traffic is basically consolidated on a couple of networks anyway.
Which brings us to the new G+ Share button. Heres what it does:
Unlike the more familiar +1 button, which shares a page in the +1 section of your Google+ profile, the G+ Share button actually shares the recommendation to your news feed (most Google+ users probably thought thats what they were doing all along with the +1 button). The G+ Share button also allows you to comment on a page and select which circles youd like to share it with.
In a nutshell, the G+ Share button is Googles version of the FB Like button.
So should you include it in your widget roll? With virtually no research to back this up at all Id say that you might want to REPLACE your +1 with the new share button.
